This post is the beginning of our 2015 Winter Adventure in Deming.

After leaving Arizona we set up at the Temperate Zone RV Park
15 miles north of Deming.  We paid for three months rent and plan to stay an additional three months in order to establish New Mexico residency.  With our lease in hand we transferred our AAA insurance and then registered the truck here and applied for our New Mexico driver's licenses.  We spent the next two weeks doing all the fun stuff like changing addresses, health insurance, bank accounts, library cards, doctors and voter registrations. And learning where everything is in town.

Besides Deming, the other town nearby is Silver City, 35 miles to the north.  Both have good shopping and lots of things to do.

Between us and Silver City is the Chola Copper Mine that has been in continuous operation since 1909.   There is a viewing area on US-152 right off of US-180.

The land across from the campground and the ranch is BLM land and the cows can graze there, but they head for home on their own when the sun starts to go down.

Around Wickenburg, Arizona....

11/7/2015

(  Writing this from Deming, New Mexico on November 7. )
On October 7, a month ago, the temperatures were in the high 90's.   So that seemed like a good day to hit an air-conditioned museum.  First we went to the visitor's center and picked up the directions for the walking tour through the historical section of Wickenburg, which ended at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, both very worthwhile.

As you walk around the historical buildings, there are buttons to push, giving information on how the town was founded.

Happy Birthday, Mother!!!!

Hassayampa River Preserve....

11/5/2015

( Writing this from Deming, NM on November 5. )
On our third day in Wickenburg the rain stopped and we went to town to check out what was available. Close to us was a SafeWay Market and on the other side of town was a Bashas Market, both good stores.  We stopped at the visitors center and picked up information on museums , parks, and restaurants.  There were lots to pick from.  The afternoon was beautiful so we drove to the outskirts of town and stopped at the Hassayampa River Preserve. We explored the desert garden with nicely identified plants.  There were three hiking/walking loops but we had to come back another day since it was close to closing time.

We spent more than an hour in the garden and didn't even make it inside the exhibit building or the river loops.
And we definitely did come back.
More of Wickenburg tomorrow.

Vulture Peak Road, Wickenburg, Arizona....

11/4/2015

( Writing this from Deming, NM on November 4. )

It was late in the day on October 3, when we arrived in Wickenburg, Arizona, after driving through three states in one day.  We had used our Benchmark Atlas to locate a possible BLM dispersed camping site near Wickenburg, taking US-93 to Vulture Mine Road, looking for Vulture Peak Road.  I directed us down the wrong road and ended up getting us lost; you would not believe the terrain we drove over!  By the time we found Vulture Peak Road it was getting dark.  Luckily we have set up camp so many times it wasn't hard to do in the dark.  We liked our new spot so much we stayed for ten days and we will definitely go back there in the future.

When we turned onto Vulture Peak Road there were two RV's camping right off the main road. We drove a mile and a half further in without seeing anyone else to find this gorgeous site.
The next day was very hot, then we had to days of rain.
The sky was so beautiful, watching the thunderheads rolling in, and we love the sound of thunder.

As the sun started to set the rain stopped and gave us a beautiful sunset.

And of course the rain gave us breathtaking flowers.

There was so much to do in Wickenburg, we will share some of our adventures in the next blog.

Have a good night.   Love,  B&D

Passing By Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam....

11/3/2015

(  Writing this from Deming, NM. on November 3. )
I know it has been twelve days since I last wrote.  Most of our days since setting up camp in Deming have been taken up with the chores of establishing ourselves here as residents.  We had to rent a site in an RV Park for six months to qualify for a New Mexico driver's license.
Now I would like to go back and catch up on our travels.
Our route from Death Valley, CA ( Oct. 2)  to Deming, NM.
(Oct. 13) took us through some beautiful country.

These two big guys were taking a break from the heat.

We drove through miles of highway passing the rare Joshua Trees in Nevada...
Picture
...and great rock formations.
Picture
We took the bypass route avoiding Las Vegas, but I had to put in this distant shot of the casinos.
Picture
Lake Mead came into view as we got closer to the Hoover Dam.

Here's a little info on the new (completed 2010) Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, on US-93.   The 1900 foot long bridge is the western hemisphere's longest single-span concrete arch bridge.
We went to visit the dam in 2008 with my sisters and saw the construction which was amazing.  Seeing the finished bridge was something we really wanted to do, though we were a little disappointed that we couldn't see any of the dam from the new bridge.  To see the dam you had to exit the bypass and we didn't want to do that pulling the travel trailer.

Continuing southeast through Arizona we pass more Joshua Trees.

I wonder what this gaggle of Saguaros are up to?
Our next stop was in Wickenburg, Arizona which I will share with you next time.
Good night to all,  miss you too.    B&D
